Education Live 24 by Peace One Day for the International Day of Education

Education is the key to establishing lasting peace. It is our responsibility to ensure that education is accessible to everyone, as it is a fundamental human right. By acknowledging the role of education in promoting peace and development, we can work towards a brighter future for all. Let us celebrate the International Day of Education and continue to strive for a world where education is valued and accessible to all.

UNESCO is dedicating the International Day of Education, celebrated on 24 January 2024, to the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech, a phenomenon that has snowballed in recent years with social media, damaging the fabric of our societies.

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrined the right to education. The declaration calls for free and compulsory elementary education. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, stipulates that countries shall make higher education accessible to all.

Today, there are 250 million children and youth who are not attending school, and 763 million adults who are unable to read or write. This is a clear violation of their right to education and it is unacceptable. It is time to bring about a transformation in the field of education. This year’s theme for the International Day of Education is “Learning for Lasting Peace,” and to mark the occasion, Peace One Day has organized Education Live 24.
