World Humanitarian Day

World Humanitarian Day
Today, we honor the courage, commitment, and compassion of humanitarians around the globe. Their tireless efforts remind us that even in the most difficult circumstances, humanity and solidarity can prevail. While the world rushes forward and often favors self-interest, many people carry light and hope to places where it is needed as much as air.
As a humanitarian, International Peace Ambassador and initiator of the “One Mine One Life” global campaign and movement for a mine-free world, I have the privilege of working with many extraordinary humanitarians, especially those involved in demining action and the global fight against landmines. For many years, I have had the honor of working in the humanitarian field with many brave and devoted UN Peacekeepers. Their work not only saves lives, but also restores dignity, safety, and hope to communities scarred by conflict.
We are united by a common desire — to make the world a better place. Changing the life of even one person for the better means changing their entire world.
Many years ago, I decided that my highest purpose would be to work for a world free of landmines and for children who suffer because of them.
We do not stop in these efforts. I am deeply grateful to all those I have met along this journey, who devote their time, energy, and often risk their lives in minefields, so that our dream may come true.
My deepest thanks and honors all those quiet heroes on the frontlines of humanitarian service.
