International Day of Education
On the International Day of Education, it is worth highlighting educational initiatives that support the development of young people’s skills, values, and sense of responsibility. Angelika Jarosławska Sapieha is the author of the upcoming book series Young ChangeMakers Stories.
Young ChangeMakers Stories celebrate the beauty of different parts of the world, exploring important themes such as the Sustainable Development Goals, culture, heritage, history, and respect for diverse peoples and religions. They also emphasize the value and importance of culture and the arts as vital parts of our shared human experience. Each book is inspired by the humanitarian missions, during which the Author – humanitarian and Peace Ambassador met many children, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and quiet heroes who work hard to support their communities and make the world a better place.
International Day of Education provides an opportunity to emphasize the role of literature and storytelling in supporting learning processes and inspiring young people to become active and responsible members of society.
Education is the key to establishing lasting peace. It is our responsibility to ensure that education is accessible to everyone, as it is a fundamental human right. By acknowledging the role of education in promoting peace and development, we can work towards a brighter future for all. Let us celebrate the International Day of Education and continue to strive for a world where education is valued and accessible to all.
UNESCO is dedicating the International Day of Education, celebrated on 24 January 2024, to the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech, a phenomenon that has snowballed in recent years with social media, damaging the fabric of our societies.
Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrined the right to education. The declaration calls for free and compulsory elementary education. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, stipulates that countries shall make higher education accessible to all.
Today, there are 250 million children and youth who are not attending school, and 763 million adults who are unable to read or write. This is a clear violation of their right to education and it is unacceptable. It is time to bring about a transformation in the field of education. This year’s theme for the International Day of Education is “Learning for Lasting Peace,” and to mark the occasion, Peace One Day has organized Education Live 24.
